When Tradition Clashes with Politics: Iyaloja and the Benin Kingdom

Enworo   Daniel     October 2, 2025, 3:51 pm

Governor Monday Okpebholo opened the Federal Government House in Benin for a ceremony the Palace has already rejected.

To:

He hosted the so-called Iyaloja to inaugurate Pastor Josephine as “market leader.” Cameras flashed, guests cheered, politicians smiled.

Yet the echo of Oba Ewuare II’s words still hangs heavy: the Iyaloja title does not belong to Benin Kingdom.

In Benin, market leadership is not a political appointment. It is cultural.

Market women choose their head, the Iyeki and the Oba confirms it.

That is the way it has always been. The monarch said so on live television. His word is final in matters of tradition.

The State Government claims it is supporting market women, building structures, and creating order....

But by importing a foreign title into Benin, it has stepped on sacred ground.

The presence of the National Iyaloja General, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, made the ceremony look grand. Yet grandeur does not equal legitimacy.

This clash is no small matter. It is not just about a title. It is about sovereignty, the right of the Benin Palace to guard its culture against outside influence.

To ignore the monarch’s declaration is to risk dividing the people and insulting centuries of tradition.

Edo must choose wisely. Power will change hands. Politicians come and go. But the Palace endures.
